The field of medical foods, that is foods used to treat specific health conditions, is becoming well established internationally but it is still an emerging discipline in Australia.

It is now generally accepted that many medical conditions such as diabetes, metabolic syndrome and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are affected significantly by lifestyle and diet, and that a pharmaceutical-only strategy often falls short of effective treatment. Although it is agreed that diet is a key ingredient in treatment, true medical foods (that is foods that have proven benefit) are relatively few.

 Food As Medicine
